5 Marathons, 5 Cities, 2 Great charities

Running one marathon is tough enough but running five in the space of eight months is surely bordering on the insane! Nevertheless that's just what city centre lawyer, Duncan Vaughan from law firm Pannone is going to do in 2009 to aid two great cancer charities.

36 year old Duncan, who lives in Manchester city centre, is aiming to raise a minimum of £25,000 for Christies and Macmillan by completing marathons in Barcelona, London, San Francisco, Berlin and New York, beginning in Barcelona on March 1 st and finishing in New York on November 1 st.

"It’s a simple idea – run five marathons in 2009 in support of Christies and Macmillan. Christies is the charity which provides funds and supports the work of the world renowned specialist cancer centre, The Christie, in Manchester (www.christies.org). Macmillan provides practical, medical, financial and emotional support for people affected by cancer and campaigns for better cancer care (www.macmillan.org.uk)"

Said Duncan, "It's going to be tough but I've run both the London and New York marathons before in 2004 so I do have some experience, although this of course will be more than double that effort. I'm determined to complete all five for the simple reason that these are two causes very dear to my heart. My grandmother died from cancer before I was born and her friend, my 'Aunty Moll' was a surrogate gran for me and a huge influence on my life. Sadly she too succumbed to cancer when I was a teenager, but I've never forgotten her and I want to do something to help, albeit in a small way, those affected by cancer."
